JOINT DECLARATION
BETWEEN
TEACHERS ASSOCIATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA (PGRI)
AND
THE MALAYSIAN ASSOCIATION FOR EDUCATION (MAE)
JAKARTA, 13 OKTOBER 2010
On this day, 13 October 2010, Persatuan Guru-guru Republik Indonesia (PGRI) and the Malaysian Association for Education (MAE) have jointly agreed to sign this declaration of mutual understanding in the spirit of solidarity. In this union of vision, and commitment to contribute meaningfully and impactfullly to the development of the Teaching Profession and the development of our societies and nations, Persatuan Guru-guru Republik Indonesia (PGRI) and the Malaysian Association for Education (MAE) share and reaffirm the view that;
Education is a crucial sector that nurtures the fullest development of human potentialities and national capacity development in all domains;
Education is a crucial instrument for nation building and the establishment of a civil and just society with continuous creation and expansion of opportunities for all.
Education is the basic right of each individual and collectively those involved in the education profession contribute directly to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities through the life span.
We realise and acknowledge that;
There is a strong historical and professional relationship between MAE and PGRI in terms of defending teachers and the teaching profession;
Educators should be committed to moulding generations of knowledgeable, harmonious and peace-loving individuals and citizenry, with positive self esteem and with awareness and determination of the civilization building mission of educators.;
Educators should support each other in defending the sovereignty of the teaching profession.
PGRI and MAE and our partners and affiliates have the responsibility and opportunities to contribute in direct and indirect ways and means to the development of our respective nations and societies and the nations and societies of the region, specifically ASEAN and to the Global Society and humanity as a whole.
We therefore pledge to that we will endeavour to;
Respect the past and deal with the realities of the present;
Envision a positive future for generations to come through our formal connections, personal and professional linkages;
Play a more meaningful and effective role in helping to resolve issues and problems that emerge from time to time in our respective societies and the societies of the Region as well as towards the Global community as a whole;
Play an active role in protecting the wellbeing of educators in our respective countries and in the Asia Pacific region as well as globally;
Maintain mutual respect and cooperation through the teaching sector and foster people to people respect and unity regardless of occasional political or other kinds of frictions or misunderstandings between the two countries or among the countries of the region and the world;
Jointly we shall contribute to the indigenous knowledge generation regarding Teaching-Learning and Education and our region and globally.
Jointly we would develop the frameworks capacity building of our educational institutions and educational systems to become mature systems exercising strategic roles in nation and civilization building.
Jointly we shall act to accelerate all Programmmes to raise the status of the teaching profession and the dignity of teachers and educators.
Jointly and with our colleagues in ASEAN and beyond we shall chart the ways forward for more constructive and effective roles of teachers and educators as intellectuals and change agents in defining and effectively following through the best practices in education and all other sectors of development for the common good of the people of the region and Mankind.
Jointly we foster the development of the Teaching Entreprise to be innovative and creative to the benefit of future generations in our region and elsewhere
Jointly we shall forge supportive relationships with teachers associations in our region and all over the world and play constructive roles in fostering World Peace.
Jointly we shall produce cardinal materials which we shall share with educators everywhere.
Jointly we affirm support for the ideals of the United Nations, UNESCO and other international agencies regarding the Universal Declarations on Education which do not contradict our national philosophies and policies at our respective stages of development of our nations and societies.
Endeavour to bring about peace, stability, prosperity and better futures for our society and next generation through the union and significant programmes and projects initiated or supported by our professional associations;
The Malaysian Association for Education (MAE) and Persatuan Guru-guru Republik Indonesia (PGRI) undertake to pursue the objectives of their professional association and union and of our joint vision of creating a strong well educated and knowledgable citizenry initiated and based on the spirit of this joint declaration in mind from this day on.
